2012 Student Poster Competition Results
The Northwest Scientific Association is happy to announce the winners of the student poster competition held at the 83rd meeting of the Association.
First place was awarded to Ms. Erin M. Herring of the Department of Geography,
Oregon for her poster entitled “Climate and vegetation in a putative Pleistocene refugium in northern
inferred from a 120, 000 year sediment record.”
Second place was awarded to Ms. Emma R. Wilson of the Department of Biological Sciences at
for her poster entitled “From field to fridge: First glimpses of fungicide-exposed gut fungi.”
Third place was awarded to Mr. Anton T. Gabrielson of the
Forestry and Conservation at the
Montana for his poster entitled “The role of Pinus lambertina cones as surface fuel in
Sierra Nevadamixed conifer forest.”
Each of the winners will receive a year’s student membership in Northwest Science as a reward. In addition Dr.
Patrick Pringle presented a copy of his beautiful book “Roadside geology of
and vicinity” to the first place winner.

Student Grant Competition
This is an opportunity to fund your research, organize a grant proposal, add substance to your CV, and potentially have your research published in the scientific quarterly, Northwest Science. The Northwest Scientific Association awards grants up to $1500 to support student researach in the pure and applied sciences. Undergraduate students are encouraged to apply. Accepting Nominations for the 2012 Awards
The Board of the Northwest Scientific Association is now accepting nominations for two awards: Outstanding Scientist and Honorary Life Membership. You must be a member of the Northwest Scientific Association to nominate. Please send an email to the Awards Committee Chair (firstname.lastname@example.org) giving the name of the individual and briefly describe how they meet the criteria given below.
Outstanding Scientist (need not be a member)
- Why is the person known nationally or internationally for his/her scientific accomplishments?
- What outstanding scientific contribution(s) of importance has he/she made to the Northwest?
- Has the majority of his/her work been accomplished either while the person resided in the Northwest or performed on northwestern systems?
- Are you willing to provide background information to the Awards Committee?
Honorary Life Membership (confined to members of the Association)
- What outstanding service has been provided to the Association?
- Has the service in office related to NWSA been provided for at least a decade?
